Together We Thrive: Advocacy as a Shared Professional Responsibility

The theme of KPA’s recent annual convention – “Together We Thrive” – reminded psychologists that our effectiveness depends on relationships, collaboration, and shared responsibility. The same is true when it comes to advocacy.

Advocacy is not separate from our professional role; rather, it is closely connected. Policy decisions shape the conditions under which we practice and the conditions under which our clients live. KPA’s current priorities showcase this connection – whether promoting equitable access to healthcare services for all citizens (especially those historically marginalized), protecting the practice of psychology from encroachment, or fighting for evidence supported mental health interventions to address suicide and violence – KPA is walking the talk.

The KPA Political Action Committee exists to give psychologists a collective, organized way to engage in the policy process. The PAC operates in a nonpartisan manner, building relationships and supporting candidates who back KPA’s priorities. It allows psychologists to speak with a unified voice in spaces where individual voices often carry limited influence.

These efforts require resources. The PAC is funded by psychologists who understand that collective action matters. Individual contributions, whether $10, $25, $50, or $100, combine to support sustained advocacy and ongoing relationships with policymakers. When many psychologists contribute at a level that feels manageable, the cumulative impact is meaningful.

If you value psychology’s role in shaping public policy, advancing human rights, and protecting access to ethical, effective care, supporting the KPA-PAC is a practical way to act on those values. Consider making a contribution during this membership year or setting up a recurring monthly donation to support ongoing advocacy efforts.

Together, our shared investment strengthens psychology’s voice in Kentucky and helps ensure that our profession—and the people we serve—can continue to thrive.
